Legendary Texas restaurateur Matt Martinez packs in the locals -- singles, as well as families -- at his always-noisy, always-crowded Lakewood restaurant. The kitchen isn't particularly creative, but it does cover all the bases, and it does several things well. The chile relleno, a poblano pepper stuffed with cheese and deep-fried, is reliable and the cheese queso is legendary. The layered Bob Armstrong dip (spiced beef, queso and guacamole) is practically a meal in itself. Those watching their fat intake will appreciate the restaurant's selection of fajitas grilled in canola oil or grilled without oil. Parking can be a problem, especially on weekends when there's usually a line out the door. It typically goes fast and it makes for some fun people watching. If you don't want to wait, avoid prime-time dining and go early or late. -- Kathryn Jones

Convenient in Lakewood
By Carl6866 on 07/10/2008
I've been coming here for years and the food each time I come is top notch. For you chicken fried steak lovers.... try their "TAMPICO" style.. has a verde sauce and covered in cheese... TO DIE FOR! And their Margaritas are pretty potent too!... They have a nice outside dining area as well, thats pretty nice at night as they have white "christmas" lights, lighting the area... It good... just try it!

Horrible!
By laurataylor07 on 10/10/2004
You could not pay me to go back & be subjected to such rude service by this disgruntled server in his 40's. A taco salad should not be slathered with refried beans either. It was disgusting. The queso tasted like microwaved Velveeta.

Standout Tex-Mex in a neiborhood of Tex-Mex legends
By exiled0904 on 09/30/2004
Matt's is a great place for Tex-Mex Don't expect fancy decor or "atmosphere" at Rancho Martinez. Don't go looking for exotic "Novelle Mexican Cusine" either. Matt's simply has THE best good old fashioned Tex-Mex in a down home setting. It's not fancy but it is the best.
