The "P" is for pharmacy. Since 1973, Stoneleigh P has been housed in an old drug store across from the Stoneleigh Hotel. The original founders of this "magnet for noncomformists," as they foresaw their restaurant, wanted to keep the old drug store's name: Stoneleigh Pharmacy. But they were forced to "white-out" all but the "P" on the paperwork to conform to the city's inane requirement that all "pharmacies" must have a registered pharmacist on duty. The interior of the drug store was largely left intact, giving the place an old-fashioned, old hat feel. Writers, artists, and other creatives frequent the bar and restaurant to quietly interact in a relaxed setting. Burgers dressed with sprouts, pasta, seafood and steaks are some of the popular menu items. Stoneleigh P remains mature, unpretentious and refreshingly sans theme. -- Gary Taylor
