When it opened in 1984, the Tabor Center shopping center was a distinctive, high-end destination, linking shoppers from nearby Larimer Square to the newly built 16th Street Mall. At that time, the glass-enclosed galleria featured dozens of specialty shops in a light and airy building that boasted a modern, industrial design. By the mid-1990s, however, the Tabor Center started to see competition for shoppers and tenants alike. While Contempo Casuals and Carlson Cards have served as mainstays, many shops have been lost along the way. Surrounded by a booming entertainment and retail area, which includes the Denver Pavilions, LoDo and the 16th Street Mall, Tabor Center developers hope to save their all-but-dying landmark. To that end, the Tabor Center has began a massive, $26 million renovation, which was completed in November 2002, and features 136,000 square-feet with ESPN Zone and other big- name shops. -- Drew Myron
