There is nothing fancy about El Taco, no live entertainment or showy Mexican decor. But then frills aren't needed when a place is always packed with folks out for a real and satisfying bite of true Mexican food for a reasonable price. The kitchen is open to view and patrons can watch the staff preparing the tacos and burritos the eatery is famed for. Favorites include tacos, the chile relleno burrito smothered in spicy green chili and shredded fried pork carnitas, all made with fresh ingredients like cilantro and red chili. Just as appealing is the bowl of green chile stew and sides of rice and refried beans that are sure to comfort your belly's hunger. This is not your typical night on the town joint. It gets packed, seating is limited and there are no margaritas or cervezas to sip on while eating. Don't forget your cash when you head out to El Taco -- the restaurant does not take credit cards or checks. -- Laura Finney

For those of you who think Blue Bonnet, Benny's, Brewery Bar, etc., etc. is the best "mexican" food around, then you should NOT go to El Taco de Mexico. Those places are for gringos who think that is mexican food. It is good mex-american food, but that's it. For the real deal, north o' the border, you gotta go to ETM. From the banal to the exotic, they have every flavor you will find in the home country. I have tried most of the items on the menu (incl. the tongue and brain) and can't get enough of this place. though not cheap for such a no-frills place, the food is great - every single time. the counter girls need a new personality but I don't go there for the atmosphere, and neither should you. My favorite - the chili relleno burrito (with carne asada added in at an extra $). If you haven't been, you gotta go and try it soon. Compared to all the Mexican-American food in this town, when you take that first bite, you'll swear your plane just landed in Aquascalientes! Adios! PS - Second place is El Tejado on Broadway around Yale. Sundays there with the live mariachis is the best.
