Sometimes it seems there are more Mexican restaurants in Denver than jalapenos in Guadalajara, from upscale fusion bistros like Tamayo to traditional local institutions like the Rio Grande, to authentic tequila bars like Aztec Sol. But as many establishments as there are to compete for your peso, no place in town offers anything quite like the uniquely pop-art experience provided by Colfax's Mezcal. Located across from the Bluebird Theater (and partly under the same ownership), Mezcal feels like a tequila-fueled hallucination: a faux-timeworn cantina decorated with vintage Mexican film posters and oil paintings of masked wrestlers. It's named for the Mexican liquor which, like tequila, is made from cooked agave and traditionally served with a worm. Mezcal's bar serves over 100 varieties of tequilas and mescals, both as shooters or in its many margaritas and other house-recipe mixed drinks. The menu is low-priced and traditional Mexican: chips and salsa, chile rellenos, tacos, enchiladas, burritos, etc. Expect to see plenty of spillover from the Bluebird, the rock shows of which appeal to the same young, adventurous crowd for whom Mezcal feels tailor-made.

Not so hot
By Christianmilner on 06/27/2008
We were excited about going...believed the press. What a let-down. The food was marginal and the service run of the mill. There are A LOT better out there!

Authentic Northern Mexico
By sbissell3 on 11/05/2006
The reason some of the reviewers here have given this place low marks is because this is not what people normally expect in the US in Mexican resturants. This is exactly what you would be served in a good family style Mexican resturant throughout Northern Mexico. I have traveled and lived all over Mexico for 25 years. My companion the first time I ate here has also lived in Mexico. We ordered a Tamal and a Relleno as a 'test' before eating; they passed with flying colors. My friend, who is a Relleno snob, ordered more Tamals and Rellenos as his main course and I had Fish Tacos. Everything, including the outrageous chocolate bread pudding desert, was excellent and exactly what you would get in Mexico. OK, I've never seen Chicken Tamals in Mexico, but they were great. If you are looking for Tex-Mex or typical south-western Mexican food, you'll probably be disappointed here. But if you want to eat Mexican food as it is done in Mexico, this is your place. I don't drink, but my friends tell me the Margaritas were the best they've had in Denver. Service was way above average. The place is very funky with Mexican Movie Posters and photos of Mexican movie stars. The clientele is definitely East Colfax but I also spotted some folks who I would guess were from Mexico. I really hope this place makes it in the frenzied Denver Mexican Resturant scene; it's way above the rest. By the way, three meals, four drinks, one desert and the bill was still less than $60; you can't beat that.
