Metro Detroit meat-lovers have been flocking to this beloved steakhouse for more than 75 years. Just how did Carl's Chop House come to be so revered over the years? Perhaps consistency. Throughout its history, Carl's has presented a straightforward menu with classic favorites like prime rib (they serve more than 16,000 cuts of prime rib a year!), pork chops and applesauce and a prime steer porterhouse steak for two (do not attempt this one on your own). The quality has also remained consistent, with fresh cuts of meat and seafood arriving daily. And even though it's an "old-time" restaurant, don't assume the place is devoid of modern flair. Every Friday and Saturday night, diners are treated to live jazz music, and on Sundays, Carl's hosts a grand brunch. For those headed out after dinner, there's a free shuttle to and from the major downtown games and theater events. No, you can't expect any neon or overly-flowery food arrangements here, but you can certainly rely on a classic, quality meal.

How did this place make the list? Have you ever eaten there? It is just terrible; quality and service!

Used to be good....
By BLoush on 07/10/2008
Carl's Chop House used to be the best steakhouse in Detroit. However recently, the quality of service and sides has diminished significantly. I have been frequenting Carl's since I was a child (I'm now 48) and will no longer be a customer. There are much better steakhouse venues in the Detroit area for the money.

Awful
By LMcK1 on 07/10/2008
This place is terrible. The food is not what it used to be. There is standing water all over the floor. I'm friends with one of their suppliers - all of their checks bounce. They owe them thousands of dollars. Not only that, they owe the city over $200,000 in taxes. They should already be closed. I wouldn't go there if it was the last place on earth. Now Irridescence in the casino is fabulous!
