Schedule: Mon.-Fri. 5AM-noon; Sat. 5AM- 5PM Detroit's Eastern Market is a gem in a city whose downtown is less-than-inviting to shoppers. It's popular enough to be a tourist stop, but not so touristy that it's lost its historic charm. By early Saturday morning, Russell Street comes alive with a diverse mix of people -- most toting wagons or carts -- in search of the freshest fruits, veggies, poultry, meats, wine and flowers. What used to be the hub of Detroit's large German community (circa the 1880s), today's Eastern Market is home to farmers from Michigan, Ohio and Canada. The growers hawk their goods street market style - with plenty of character and care inside the eight sheds along Russell Street. As part of your history tour, stop by the old R. Hirt Jr. Co., where you can special order cheese and sausage by the cut. You'll also find some new additions, such as antiques, fresh herbs and many organic offerings. The market is also known for its annual Flower Day (in early June), a huge flower/plant sale and festival that attracts more than 80 growers. -- J. Best shopping in town!

I go to Eastern Market almost every weekend in the spring, summer and fall. IT is the best place to get fresh produce. Just over the Freeway, are the butcher shops. The products are always good, the prices excellent! Sappho

I went to the Eastern Market this Mother's Day and what a disappointment!!! The weather was not an issue (it was perfect) there were only 3 vendor, very limited selection and over priced merchandise. Have gone in past years with less than happy memories but after going again this year....I know this was the last.

A Great Place!

The open farmers' market known as "Eastern Market" is truly a gem left over from the 19th century. There was once a "Western Market" located off of Michigan Ave. in southwest Detroit on the edge of Downtown. Unfortunately, it was the victim of the construction of the Fisher Freeway. It is good for all of Michigan, especially, southeastern Michigan, that we were able to save 65 percent of Eastern Market from past civic leaders who lacked vision and planning for this area into the 21st century. Hopefully, we will expand upon what's there in this market environment and make it true "destination" for tourist and locals.
