Ushering in perhaps the top-tier lounge/club experience in downtown proper, the October 2004 grand opening of Elysium was just that -- grand. As upscale as downtown Detroit has possibly ever seen, this bi-level gem of a club/lounge sets a new bar in city nightlife. Sleek design and raging colors create a backdrop that literally appears to pulsate to the beat of whatever song is playing. A couple of different drink stations, themselves ornate and done in mod color schemes, make getting a drink (which run a little on the pricey side) not much of a problem. An open dance floor, offset by railings, gives night owls a place to step to house, progressive and trance. Thursdays will showcase a disco-funk night. There is a strong emphasis on dress code here, so choose wisely. Sometimes it's nice to get a little dolled up and drop some loot in a place like this, where style meets substance in seemingly epic proportions. No jeans, caps or questionable footwear. On different nights, the crowd is part office workers, part party people. In local print and by word of mouth, Elysium has been compared favorably to clubs/lounges in NYC and Miami. Expect a whopping $20 cover after 9PM.

Good.

Admission is fair. DJ is good. I have gone here twice. Both times were on Sundays. First time, gym shoes weren't allowed. Drinks were expensive: 10 bucks for a shot of Ciroc. 14 bucks for a top shelf long island. The crowd danced and mingled. Dressed nicely, and down to earth. Big place, multiple floors. Security is good. Manditory coat check. Videos on a huge screen for most songs that they play. A/C. Second time, same, except they allowed gym shoes and the people were looking like bums. I don't know what happened....
