Rate and Write a Review How fitting that this East Side staple is named after a gem. Macomb County's very own precious nightspot in the middle of the continually expanding Mount Clemens -- a downtown where five years ago you could fire off a cannon without incident -- has gone from underrated to necessary. Enormous inside, with a main dance floor big enough to hold a small island nation, the Emerald Ballroom uses a booming system to churn out enough sound to make anyone bump and grind. This floor is located where the stage and seating area of the former theater used to be. The DJs play it all here: from hip-hop to commercial alt-rock to techno. The Rock Room bar and the balcony present two separate, yet clearly defined areas. With three levels and five bars strategically located throughout, getting drinks is never a problem. And while it has little problem with its identity, the Emerald is both an impressive DJ-based dance experience and live music venue. Long known as the sometimes-hangout of East Siders Kid Rock and Uncle Kracker, a celebrity sighting is never too much to expect. It slams on weekends here, where boozing and dancing is the top priority, besides hooking up. The Emerald is loud and fun and has served as the cornerstone of nightspots that helped reinvent a once-snoring city.
