Rate and Write a Review Ka-ching! Detroit is now the largest city in the U.S. to have casinos, thanks to a vote allowing for three of them to be built on the riverfront. The MGM Grand (Yes, as in Vegas MGM Grand) is the first of the gaming palaces to open, albeit in a temporary location -- the former IRS building on the Lodge Freeway. The formerly drab government building has been glammed up considerably, replete with gaudy statues, overbearing light fixtures, psychedelic carpets and ladies, ladies, ladies! The Grandettes, as the scantily-clad hostesses (most are former models) are called, are undoubtedly as much of an attraction as both the hundreds of slot machines and the eighty blackjack, baccarat, pai gow and poker tables. The icing on this 24-hour pleasure palace is the buffet, which the casino claims is more magnificent than anything in Vegas or Atlantic City. Dig in and help turn the Motor City into the glitzy (and rich) cheeseball it hopes to become.
