This elegant, European-style hotel is worth the drive to Birmingham. What makes it so special? Perhaps it's the afternoon teatime, or the 24-hour concierge -- or the hotel's promise never to deny a guest's request. All the rooms feature Belgian linens, deep soaking tubs, furnished balconies and fluffy down pillows. The Townsend is listed on the Conde Nast Traveler Gold List ("The Best Places to Stay in the Whole World") and frequently hosts big-name celebrities. If it's good enough for Madonna, it's good enough for us.

Intoxicated Man
By KMMierz on 02/26/2009
My husband and I have several times chosen the Townsend as our get a way from out hectic schedules and have enjoyed it tremendously. However, we stayed at the Townsend 2/23/2009 for my birthday, from the time we arrived there wasn't anyone at the valet for more than 10 minutes, so we parked our own vehicle. After checking in we came to the lobby to have a cocktail before dinner only to be aggravated by a very intoxicated older man who wouldn't leave me alone until my husband intervened. The hotel personel was aware of this gentleman as they helped him wipe his wine stained face and stained sweater. Never once did they escort him out of the lobby. Then my husband went to get the car for us to go to dinner and the same intoxicated man followed me out to the car asking me to go out with him (all in the presence of the doormen). When we arrived back to the hotel from dinner, again, no one was available for valet. My husband dropped me off at the entrance and AGAIN, the same intoxicated man was in the lobby and AGAIN approaching me, all in the presence of the hotel personnel who seemed to know him. He was sloppy in his speech and very unsteady knocking into things so it was obvious beyond his wine stained white sweater what his issue was. When my husband and I checked out in the morning and were asked about our stay we did let the clerk know of the incidences, she asked if we knew if he was a guest or not...does that make a difference...we did not ask him. She apologized for the incident and asked if we had breakfast. We were on a schedule to get back to our children we had left with a sitter so we could have our get a way. Needless to say our stay was not acceptable, we were unable at any time to enjoy the ambience of the lower level without being harrassed by this man, in which the hotel did more for him than ensuring that the rest of the guests were not bothered. I feel a refund or a certificate to stay again in the future would have been the best damage control at checkout since it was not being taken care of at the time the intoxicated man was hanging out in the lobby.
