Rate and Write a Review If sipping on authentic history on your next bar visit tickles your fancy, steer yourself toward Corktown, the Detroit neighborhood named for the Irish county. Open since 1920, the Gaelic League Irish American has been a one-of-a-kind cultural center that puffs up its chest, proudly proclaiming that it's more club than mere bar. Both annual and daily memberships are available at the bar. Easily the most highly regarded Irish establishment in the Detroit area, the Gaelic League takes St. Patty's Day and its preceding week to a new level with a parade kick-off under their big tent. But even in other seasons, rosy-cheeked clientele swill thick, frosty grog sent from the Celtic gods and clap and sing to the tunes of upbeat, live Irish music on weekends. Come ready to learn: This preservation society offers genealogy lectures, Ceili dance lessons and speeches by visiting Irish politicians. -- Jessica J. Shaw
