We've been to the Chinatowns in San Francisco and New York, but nothing could have prepared us for the steamed chicken feet that came as an option with dim sum at Golden Harvest. Who'd have thought that such a divey looking joint across the street from the massive General Motors Tech Center would serve such authentic Chinese food? Once we gathered ourselves after the poultry peds incident, we were quite pleased with the rest of the menu. Seafood entrees abound, including cuttlefish, squid and jellyfish. Veggie lovers get a nod with the scrumptious stirfried green beans (you'll have to ask them to prepare the dish without pork). Real value can be found on the dinner menu after 4:30PM. Choose two dishes for $14.95, four for $29.95 or six for $45.95. Order up and pass the platters. -- Heidi Rehak

Going downhill fast! Get off this train.

My wife, son and I recently visited Golden Harvest. We go from time to time and even returned after a friend had told us that the dumplings weren't fresh. We should have taken that advice and just gone to Shangri la instead. The dim sum carts took forever to come and most of the selections didn't appear fresh and my fears were confirmed after eating it, over cooked and stale taste probably from sitting out too long. I ordered a noodle dish for my son since he's a toddler and the noodles were overcooked and over salted. I asked if they could be taken off the bill and was given an answer that "we sell a lot of this noodle" and there is nothing wrong with it. Customer service is dead here. Best advice, move on to another dim sum restaurant or head over to Windsor, worth the drive. Avoid Golden Harvest if you want good quality and good service.

Dim-sum is great

We have been to Toronto, SF and Chicago Chinatown. Also Windsor. This is is rank up there with the rest. We used to like Wah Court in Windsor, but I think they changed cook. We like it better than Shangrila and Kim's garden. Too bad we are from the westside (Livonia), we go there only once in awhile.

Good food, but bad service
By superduperfly69 on 01/15/2007
During Dim sum time, they will only frequent the tables with many people, rarely ever stopping by those with parties of 3 or less. During dinner time, the waiters/waitreses will sometimes forget to take your order, making you call them over to order, and whats worse, they dont speak english very well. It doesnt help that the food takes longer than expected to arrive, but once it does, it is delicious! Come for the food, stay for the food.

Authentic and fun

Okay, let me begin by stressing that the dim sum at Golden Harvest does not match what you'll get at the legendary Hong Kong City Hall cafeteria, and certainly not San Francisco's Yank Sing. (Oh, and there's a wonderful place I know off Shanghai's Bund.) That said, I've become a real devotee of Golden Harvest, the most authentic Chinese restaurant in Metro Detroit. To their credit, this family of Hong Kong Chinese has been expanding and updating the menu in recent months, adding -- if it's not a non sequitor -- some sushi. Yes, as another reviewer noted, they may try to give us daibitsu (roughly the Chinese equivalent of Japan's gaijin) forks and knives. But once they know us, they take care of. Each of the wait staff, cart staff, if you prefer, gets to know your favorite dishes, whether snow pea pod tips or shrimp harkow. (Oh, and not enough Westerners? That's great. The ones here KNOW their Asian cuisine and it's a find among Alpha diners who relish sharing a special find.) There are a couple more dim sum joints in town, especially if you include Windsor, Ontario, but I know what I like and where I get it.
