Whoever said speed limits aren't necessary never hung out at Whiskey in the Jar. This tiny bar, which houses a dart board, billiard table and a bar, is so inconspicuous that pushing 30 down the one-way, car-filled street is a sure-fire way to blaze by your destination. Once you've pinpointed its location, parking is another challenge, especially if you're not privy to Hamtramck's "old chair" philosophy. In other words: If you see an open spot marked by a chair, it's not yours unless you put the chair there yourself. It's an adult game of dibs.Well worth the patience, the one-of-a-kind Whiskey in the Jar rewards patrons with down-home hospitality. Regulars warmly welcome newcomers, the owner's gift for storytelling being the highlight of any visit. (Be sure to ask about the tale of the Ratalope!) Lay an eye on the decorative Whiskey's pizzazz, namely the empty bead-draped beer bottles, hanging across the back of the bar. This establishment exudes a unique local flavor. It's a welcome break from the city's tri-level dance clubs and VIP rooms. -- Jessica J. Shaw

bad service
By jocelynfx on 03/25/2007
has always been an ok place to hang out until I realized they take advantage of the intoxicated clientele. unfortunately, i was not as intoxicated as they considered when they increased my tab by 3, ran my card without permission, claimed it was an accident, swore the transaction had been voided, and then accepted cash for my bill. In the end, I payed over 30 dollars for an 8 dollar tab, and the "voided" transaction was never resolved.

Pray You're a Local
By dchimayblue on 07/08/2004
We walked into what was a seemingly nice place when an uneducated fellow came over and - unprovoked - said "you're not from here are you?". After he bullied our two ladies, he went on to pick on a challenged fellow named Steven who was eventually thrown out after a fight (thrown out - because he was "slower" than the idiot in the black shirt [it's all relative...right?]). Did I mention that the door knob in the black shirt (who picked on Steven) kept on reminding us there was a "patio out back" (i.e., let's go out there so I can try to kick your ass). Ah yes - it was good to see the suburbanites agains the locals - oops - the locals agains the suburbanites. In short, it was a case study in social science and we drove home wondering just how cool it would be someday to be able to come down to Hamtramck and have a good time. Hey you in the black shirt - you're a DUDE! Meanwhile, spend your time (and money) at both Small's and the Belmont in the unlikely event you want to venture down here.
