Most Detroiters hit the elegant Whitney at least once, usually to celebrate a special occasion. It's worthwhile (and almost mandatory) to linger awhile after dinner to explore the mansion built by lumber baron David Whitney. The 21,000-square-foot pink granite abode is far from humble, but diners feel rather comfy tucked away in one of its 52 rooms. Appetizers include full Russian caviar service, in-house smoked salmon and pate. The best way to sample the fare is to order the fixed-price menu (there is a vegetarian option). On Sundays, the brunch is one of the most extravagant you'll find. If you can't swing a full meal, a favorite way for locals to top off a night on the town is to pop into the third floor lounge for dessert and live entertainment. The truth is, you really haven't lived until you've had the Whitney's glazed bombe of peanut butter and chocolate mousse.
