With its glazed tile exterior and '50s diner vibe inside, family-owned Bates Hamburgers is a Detroit-area tradition. If it weren't, it wouldn't be constantly filled with patrons. Tiny, 90-cent burgers and thick, rich milkshakes are its forte. Juice from the greasy spoon's burgers runs off the meat like a faucet, providing for a messy answer to a fast-food craving. The french fries are crisp and salty, the ideal counterpart to the juicy burgers. Besides their '50s-style counter service, Bates locations feature a walk-up window, similar to the Rally's chain. There's basically nothing for the heart-healthy bunch on this menu, and that's not a bad thing.

Very simple if you like fried onions and grease on your burger along with all the other goodies , Fries, Shakes/Malts, Onion rings, etc. then Bates offers the gourmet of grease burgers, if you can eat a White Castle and like it, then you'll eat a Bates burger and love it. Thats a whole different taste compairing Grease Burgers to a real Burger that you would find at a place like Millers

Bates has a better burger for sure! The fries are good too! The smell when you drive by is enough to make you hungry. For the type of burger they are --they are the best! If you want a gourmet burger go somewhere else I guess.

You guys are nuts, i live right next to bates and i find it disgusting! It is just like any other fast food joint. Low quality everything. The best burger i have ever had was at the wolfgang puck grille in detroit at mgm.
