Smack dab in the middle of Mexican Town, this place garners glorious raves for its more-than-ample parking lot. It's huge and free, which is rare for Detroit. Inside, you'll find an interesting mix of neighborhood folks, suburban commuters, police officers and gobs of hipsters grabbing a late night bite. The Mexican fare at Xochimilco (pronounced so-she-MIL-co) is traditional, consistent and fresh. Look under the ''favorites of Mexico'' portion of the menu to find more than the typical taco and chimichanga offerings. The nopalitos, a dish of cactus cooked with eggs, onion, green peppers and spices, is a particular standout. Portions are quite large and you could easily split some dinners. Drinks are quite a deal, too: Domestic beer and imports both cost $3. Or else you could splurge on a frozen margarita. The decor is worn and Mexican decorations abound, from posters to blankets to beer signs. But the atmosphere is friendly, comfortable and the food can't be beaten.

when my husband was alive we made the trip down to Xochimilco at least once every couple of months, he loved their botana's, always great food and more than you could eat, always taking a doggie bag home.

This used to be my favorite

I was one of the die-hard customers for over 30 years, but the last few years it has really gone downhill. Just look up at the ceiling and see all the cobwebs and dirt that is never cleaned up or go in the main first floor bathroom and try to hold your breath while you are doing what you have to. The food is very bland, the quality has really gone down, as well as the prices gone up (for what you get). This place has been resting on its rep for several years. The only thing good is the free parking and quick service, but is that what you really go to a resturant for? The food is much much better at El Rancho six blocks away - they also have free parking, fast service and the place is CLEAN!!!
