Smack dab in the middle of Mexican Town, this place garners glorious raves for its more-than-ample parking lot. It's huge and free, which is rare for Detroit. Inside, you'll find an interesting mix of neighborhood folks, suburban commuters, police officers and gobs of hipsters grabbing a late night bite. The Mexican fare at Xochimilco (pronounced so-she-MIL-co) is traditional, consistent and fresh. Look under the ''favorites of Mexico'' portion of the menu to find more than the typical taco and chimichanga offerings. The nopalitos, a dish of cactus cooked with eggs, onion, green peppers and spices, is a particular standout. Portions are quite large and you could easily split some dinners. Drinks are quite a deal, too: Domestic beer and imports both cost $3. Or else you could splurge on a frozen margarita. The decor is worn and Mexican decorations abound, from posters to blankets to beer signs. But the atmosphere is friendly, comfortable and the food can't be beaten.

Xochimilco: Clearly the Best !
By argovac1 on 01/03/2008
THE RATER THAT STATED MEXICAN VILLAGE IS MUCH BETTER was "over served" - clearly. Xochimilco is 'the bomb" clearly the best option in Mexicantown. Huge portions, incredibly fast service and a wonderful menu to boot. You will never go wrong with this choice - make it your First Choice.
