Smack dab in the middle of Mexican Town, this place garners glorious raves for its more-than-ample parking lot. It's huge and free, which is rare for Detroit. Inside, you'll find an interesting mix of neighborhood folks, suburban commuters, police officers and gobs of hipsters grabbing a late night bite. The Mexican fare at Xochimilco (pronounced so-she-MIL-co) is traditional, consistent and fresh. Look under the ''favorites of Mexico'' portion of the menu to find more than the typical taco and chimichanga offerings. The nopalitos, a dish of cactus cooked with eggs, onion, green peppers and spices, is a particular standout. Portions are quite large and you could easily split some dinners. Drinks are quite a deal, too: Domestic beer and imports both cost $3. Or else you could splurge on a frozen margarita. The decor is worn and Mexican decorations abound, from posters to blankets to beer signs. But the atmosphere is friendly, comfortable and the food can't be beaten.

MEXICAN VILLAGE IS MUCH BETTER
By riffraffchic1 on 05/02/2007
The food at Xochimilco is glorified Taco Bell. Mexican Village accross the X-way is 100 times better and more authentic. I have traveled to Mexico many times and they do not serve "wet" burrito's there. Xochimilco needs a good cleaning both inside and out. I can only imagine what the kitchen must look like, Can you say "health department" where are you?

OVERRATED! 4/16/07
By salemwtch1 on 04/16/2007
I don't know why Xochimilco's is always rated the #1 Mexican restaurant in Metro Detroit. It's extremely overrated. Los Galanos beats Xochi's 110%! People need to get out more and experience other Mexican restaurants in the area.

X employee's view

Ya the food does suck, it's as authentic as Taco Bell, but the people that go to this place are as loyal as the days are long. Most of the people who go are often regulars who according to them "have been coming for 30 years." And as far as the roach problem goes ya they are some there and the owners are aware and they are constantly taking measures to get it under control. A little FYI for you ALL the restuarants in Mexican Town have roaches or mice and if you don't think so you're a little naive. I've seen roaches in every resturant. As far as the wait staff goes NO ONE comes to work dirty and we get sent home for any little discrepancy like forgetting a bow tie. And I'd like to see any normal person carry four-six plates FULL OF FOOD at once and lug around cups and buckets full of salsa for eight hours WITHOUT getting a little messy. As far as the service being bad I'll admit there are some "take or leave" servers but for the most part we are the best damn servers on this side of the Detroit river. Maybe we don't always have TIME to chat or kiss your ass but we get those drinks and plates out faster than you can say "Can I get another basket of chips?" We get treated like we're nothing, lower than the roaches crawling on the walls by management and customers alike all in the hope of a tip that might not even come. There's no dignity in waiting tables especially in a place as diverse as Detroit. So next time you want to call someone a bad server you should think about that!
