Like many restaurant and coffeehouse owners, Jill and Al Mozena aren't shy about referring to their establishment as a home away from home (and just this once it doesn't sound like a tired old marketing ploy). Maybe it's because it is housed inside a spacious, lovingly renovated and antique- filled, This-Old-House kind of a house. It definitely has quite a bit to do with the relaxed, friendly vibe of the Mozenas and their family. You can definitely get a better-than- average cup o' joe here, as well as yummy home- baked pastries, but part of the reason Toast and Jam is such a hot spot is because of the music. Jill Mozena is a musician herself and does quite a bit to ensure that live music is on the menu at the coffeehouse every night. Toast and Jam offers separate smoking and nonsmoking rooms; musicians perform in the nonsmoking room. Passersby often peek into the entry hall area to read the slate that lets you know the food specials and who is playing, then duck out. Don't worry: They'll almost certainly be stopping back a little later that night.
