Located in one of the many mini-malls cluttering 28th Street, Mikado Sushi, with its bright neon sign and bland exterior, looks more like a pizza joint than an excellent Japanese restaurant. The cold, over-lit interior doesn't do much to dispel first impressions, but the atmosphere warms when the sushi bar chefs shout the obligatory Japanese greeting as you enter. Once you're seated, the waitress starts you on your journey to digestive delight with a wet cloth to clean your hands (warm in winter, cold in summer) and a cup of hot tea. The menu offers everything you'd expect from a Japanese restaurant from scrumptious appetizers like goma ae (cold boiled spinach with sweet sesame sauce) to all kinds of sushi (try the Unagi -- freshwater eel) to tempura and teriyaki dishes. Close your eyes, take a bite and you'll swear you're at least in California.
