Rate and Write a Review The National Railroad Museum contains more than 75 pieces of rare railroad equipment, as well as locomotives like Dwight D. Eisenhowers World War II staff train and car, and a "Big Boy" steam locomotive. The museum opened in 1961 at the former 22-acre Cooke Memorial Park, and it added the Victor McCormick Train Pavilion, which houses many of the museums special pieces, in 1970. The museum later acquired 10 acres south of Dutchmans Creek, on which it built the 1-mile track loop used for visitor train rides (included in the admission price). In addition to offering a reception center, exhibit halls and a gift shop, the museum hosts many special events, such as a Fourth of July fireworks celebration, Civil War re-enactments and antique-auto shows. As the museum continues to grow, its goal is to collect and preserve equipment, artifacts and historical material associated with railroading so it can exhibit, display and interpret the history and significance of railroading.
