A good Cajun likes plenty of peppers in his courtbouillon, shrimp in his net and love in his home. Taking a bit of the Cajun metaphor to heart, Dixie's Tavern prepares some fine New Orleans-style Cajun specialties. Dixie's Tavern adheres to a Mardi Gras theme in all ways. The walls are decorated with Mardi Gras beads and masks. Specialty drinks are named voodoo venom, gaiter martini, oyster shooter and Dixie hurricane. All are good accompaniments to Bourbon Street pie or a Dixie brownie. Louisiana delicacies such as gator bites, (yes it's the real thing) and crawfish bread are among appetizers. Gumbo soups, salads, sandwiches and po-boys served on French baguettes are lighter fare. Dinners range from the usual chicken and steak varieties to sausage-filled jambalaya or the rice specialty, crawfish etouffee. Dixie's Tavern is located near lots of other restaurants and bars in Downtown Norfolk's Waterside Festival Marketplace. TIP: Order your drink and some edibles and take it outside to eat on the banks of the Elizabeth River.
