Despite its cutesy name -- a play on the old Corner Pub that once occupied the space -- this is a traditional, British-style spot. During the bustling business lunch and happy hour, old-timers from West Hartford's Elmwood section are right at home alongside the younger crowd. Named after the owner's pug Mac, the pub has a welcoming exterior: Park benches and brick sidewalks lead you into a dark, warm interior of brick and wood with a green-hued tin ceiling and plush, padded mahogany booths. Although the atmosphere seems perfect for cigar or pipe smoking, both are strictly prohibited, allowing guests to enjoy the upscale comfort food in a smoke-free environment. Patrons of the bar (where cigarette smoking is permitted) and dining room guests often order the Pug's popular shepherd's pie, along with other favorites such as macaroni and cheese, pot roast or the vegetarian Zen Burger. The Pug has a large selection of imported and domestic bottled beer and ale, with 12 brews on draught. -- Melanie Tokarz

The Pug has, hands down, the BEST macaroni and cheese EVER. I keep trying to figure out how they manage to get all the penne pasta pieces to stick straight up in the baking dish....guess I'll have to keep ordering it 'till I understand!

The Corner Pug...Man's best friend
By gbmac22 on 05/12/2002
On a recent visit to Connecticut my wife and I discovered a wonderful little restaurant we only wish were closer to our home in Maryland. It's called The Corner Pug and from the moment you enter you are treated to the perfect dining experience. Our first encounter with The Corner Pug was the result of our car acting up while traveling toward Hartford on I-84. The exit we took off the highway in search of a gas station fortunately led us directly to the Pug's front door. While our car was being repaired my wife and I settled in for a relaxing lunch. I choose the Porky Pug Pork sandwich and my wife ordered The Pub Salad. The sandwich was outstanding, served on a french roll with red peppers and onions, a perfect combination to compliment the herb crusted loin of pork. My wife reported her Pub Salad was equally tasty, and judging from the fresh greens, tomato, and red onions, I would have to agree. We also both agreed the beef, beer & sausage chili soup was the best we had ever had. The decor was tastefully appointed with just the right mix of mahogany woods and ox-blood leather seating. The stained glass window treatments and use of brick put the finishing touches on a magnificent English Pub experience. We were so impressed with our lunch that our decision to have dinner at The Corner Pug was a given. Once again we had nothing but the highest marks. The food was wonderful, the staff courteous and efficient, and more than reasonably priced. The only thing that could have added to our experience would have been our car taking another day to repair.
