Considered by many to be the king of the famous Max family of restaurants, Max Downtown is the Hartford spot to see politicians and celebrities hobnobbing at the bar or relaxing in the custom cigar room. Dark wood tones and white linen tablecloths enhance a menu of steaks and seafood, including such favorites as braised lobster and pan-seared jumbo scallops with Thai red curry sauce. Offered every weekday are "Plates of the Day" such as buttermilk chicken salad and shrimp scampi over black pepper fettuccini. The spacious bar gets hopping around 5PM, and the after-work crowd digs an array of special Max Martinis while regulars retrieve their private stashes of wine from personalized lockboxes.
