The New Haven Hotel is not about to start holding swing dance competitions in its lobby, or book in busloads of collegiate hockey fans. This eight- year-old hotel has one mission: To create an atmosphere of utterly unruffled comfort. The luxurious spaces were designed by a doctor for people who really want a restful atmosphere in every part of their hotel stay -- in the elevator, lobby and restaurant as well as in their rooms. Indeed, the third floor is reserved for people who have recently been discharged from Yale-New Haven Hospital, so that they can build up their strength and get rest in an environment that is as uplifting as it is calm. But the more vigorous guests have two pools and a health club at their disposal, and a great launching pad for walks all over downtown New Haven: shopping, restaurants and museums are a pleasant short walk from the hotel. -- Constance Markiewicz
