Located near the outskirts of downtown Hartford, First & Last Tavern has been a dining destination for many who otherwise avoid the busy capital city. The two other locations (in Avon and Middletown) havent weakened this store's customer base at all. People keep coming back for the freshly baked breads, homemade sauces, 27 selections of pasta, seafood, grinders, the raw bar, and especially for the pizza. Authentic brick-oven pizza, baked in the open-air kitchen in full view of the dining room and served on a pedestal tray, is what made First & Last famous, along with its excellent bread baskets. The pizzas are available in all the standard toppings, plus 12 specialty pizzas, including the popular no-sauce Neapolitan (tomato slices, mozzarella, olive oil, garlic and herbs) and the First & Last Special (a tomato pie garnished with chopped salad). The walls are covered with black and white photos of political leaders, sports figures and scenes of Hartford. -- Melanie Tokarz

SEX, DRUGS, & ALCOHOL in HTFD

I have visited the restaurant and the bar on separate occasions. The waitresses I found acted as though we were interrupting a "bitch session" but the food itself is ok... The bartenders give an excessive amount of alcohol in their mixed drinks and do "extra" for some patrons more then others...especially if the patron is attractive or a regular. Marty, the senior bartender is a sexual harassment claim waiting to happen. I was victim to some of his verbal rape. Also, I was witness to distribution of a narcotic at the bar to a variety of patrons as well as several of the employees. I survey many different dinning facilities for a living and I would never visit or recommend this establishment to friends or family... However, the First and Last Tavern in Avon is Excellent. This one I highly recommend...You will see the difference in ownerships of each establishment by the professionalism of the staff alone.

You can't beat the food,nor can you see a bartender work the room better than Marty. Tell him the Kendall's sent you,and pay double for your beers. We've been going to the First & Last for 30 years,and have never had a bad meal. My only complaint,still no picture of me on the wall.
