Some 100,000 years ago, Diamond Head (Leahi, to the Hawaiians) was formed by a single enormous eruption, creating what is today possibly the most famous crater in the world, and certainly the most recognizable landmark in Hawaii. Visitors can trek the .8-mile (one way) trail to the summit, which peaks at 760 feet and provides spectacular views of Waikiki. Considered a moderate hike, the trail starts out paved before turning into a series of rocky switchbacks. The last stretch consists of several sets of stairs (227 steps in all), a long tunnel, and a lookout tower that gives a panoramic view. Although guests of all ages and ability levels make the hike each day, keep in mind that the final portion of the trail requires stooping through a low overhang in order to reach the final lookout tower. While clear days of course afford the best views, consider visiting near the end of the day or during a light rain, when trails are less crowded, although slippery when wet.

Great Hike, Great View

The hike is quite easy for most people, but difficult enough that, along with the spectacular views from the top, comes a sense of accomplishment. Even those who find the hike difficult will find plenty of opportunities to rest and enjoy the view along the way. Highly recommended for every person who sets foot in Waikiki.
