You've conquered your fear of heights by parasailing and skydiving, now conquer your deep blue phobia with an experience worthy of 'Fear Factor.' The 30-foot Kainani makes two daily trips to a spot three miles offshore where depths reach upwards of 300 feet. There, from the safety of a metal and Plexiglass cage, thrill-seekers get an up-close view of Galapagos and sandbar sharks, many of which reach lengths of 10 feet. Other species, such as tiger, hammerhead and gray reef sharks, often make appearances, and in December 2005, the Kainani crew had the great fortune of a visit from an 18-foot great white -- such a rare occurrence that the footage they took is the only video ever in Hawaii of the ocean's most feared creature. Crew members throw chum into the water to up viewing pleasure for snorkelers in the cage, and hand-feed the toothy fish from the stern for the pleasure of those still on board. During the 15-minute ride out to the sharky spot, guests may also spot dolphins riding the boat's wake or even a breaching humpback, if the season is appropriate. Due to popularity and the capacity of the vessel, reservations are highly recommended. Strong swimming skills are not necessary -- even children have taken the plunge. Because of the size of the boat, landlubbers may experience some seasickness, so be sure to take appropriate precautions. Also, although the water itself averages about 70 degrees, you may want to consider bringing a short wetsuit (not provided by the crew) and a sweatshirt for after your dive. Don't forget an underwater camera to provide proof of your courage to friends back home.
