Hawaiian native Alan Wong won the James Beard Award in 1996, and since then has opened a restaurant in Tokyo, been a consultant for Aloha Airlines and published a cookbook. But Wong hasn't neglected his flagship restaurant on King Street. Although he no longer cooks at his namesake restaurant personally, the menu continues to reflect the inventive Hawaiian contemporary cuisine that he created. Dishes such as the nori-wrapped ahi tempura and the kiawe-grilled beef tenderloin are high-concept renditions of local favorites. The steamed bowl of shellfish is perhaps a bit more Continental in its leanings, but sure to please seafood fans all the same. Five-course prix fixe dinners offer diners the chance to explore every corner of the extensive menu. If you visit at the right time, you may even see Wong himself, recently returned from a whirlwind tour of the mainland or a trip to his Japanese venture. -- Lena Katz

The last time I was there, I had their "special Kalbi"...thinking how could anyone make a bad Kalbi...well guess what ...it WAS very bad. Tasted like a $1 bag of fruit flavored chinese jerky from chinatown, Oh...my wife had the seafood stew....just as bad. Everything was overcooked. Nothing worse than overcooked rubbery shrimps.

The 7 course meal we had there was one of the best things we did while in Hawaii. The service was incredible. Each course came with a wine to bring out the flavors and it did. Also with every course there was explanations from the chef and art on a plate. It was pricey but I'll do it again and recommend it to anyone traveling to Hawaii.
