Price Per Person: $30-$40* Blue Plate Special: Inventive, award-winning Pacific Rim cuisine. Signature items include the Dim Sum Canoe, glazed short ribs, blackened ahi. Amazing fresh seafood, roasted meats. The Scoop: Roy Yamaguchi has been a busy boy. He's risen to the upper echelon of the culinary world and shown that there's more to Hawaiian food than coconuts and poi. He hosts his own PBS show and sells cookbooks galore. He's won the James Beard Award. And his restaurant empire is expanding faster than you can say "Island-style poke." Signature items such as baby back ribs and blackened ahi have become classics and can be found on the menu at every Roy's in the country. Another portion of the menu includes original recipes by the head chef of each restaurant. Since all the chefs are proteges of Roy, you can count on getting some unforgettable Pacific Rim cuisine. The Scene: These sophisticated, high-gloss restaurants are set in cultural capitals around the country. They're popular special-occasion restaurants, though prohibitively high prices keep the masses from the door. Roy's stamp is on everything -- he even has his own wine label, which offers exclusive reds, whites and sakes. -- Lena Katz *Price Per Person includes entree, drink and dessert.

Whenever our family entertains out of towners or dines at Roy's in Hawai`i Kai for special family events, we are always impressed with the service, quality, flavors, and diversity of the menu. In fact, my wife and I had a small reception there when we renewed our vows when our daughter was six and it simply was frosting on the proverbial cake for a special day in our lives. Everyone we've taken there from out of town simply loved their experience at Roy's. It's fun to go early and slowly watch the food preparation people get the line ready for the rush. As the room fills up, the staff begins accelerating in kind until it reaches a crescendo of sorts - every staff member moving faster and faster yet nothing in terms of quality of lost. While each chef has their individual culinary talents, it's really special when Roy himself is there as he checks the plates just before they're taken to the diners. We recommend Roy's without reservation for a great time, great food and a fine time to share local/Pacific rim cuisine with special friends.

Hugely disappointed

I had heard great things about this restaurant but I thought it was a major letdown. It smells musty inside, service was blah and the food was no better than coffee shop food. I would NOT recommend this place to anyone or waste another dollar there. The one on the big island is nothing special either and is super loud.
