With its red, dramatic walls, black furniture, soft lighting and artsy, sophisticated appeal, Mezzanotte Ristorante provides an atmosphere not that common in the suburbs. Most suburban haunts smack of the institutionalism inherent to the national restaurant chains that dominate that space; hence Mezzanotte, with its extensive, upscale menu and wine list, is a welcome change. Items like sliced smoked salmon and pasta dishes dotted with elegant accessories like baby artichoke hearts and sun dried tomatoes reach out to the more refined pallet. While Mezzanotte does have a children's menu, the ''reservations recommended,'' white table cloth service and the pricing make it more of a date or special occasion place than a spot for a family meal. Additionally, the restaurant is centered around an elegant bar that bespeaks a more adult atmosphere. The dinner menu includes several steaks, including a New York strip and an aged rib eye as well as veal, rack of lamb, various seafood dishes and an interesting stuffed quail option.

Just perfect!

I am so happy that they have come to Cypress!! I don't have to go anymore to downtown or the Galleria for fine food. The service is outstanding and the food just incredible. This is not your typical Italian food restaurant so don't expect spaghetti and meatballs (although they have plain food for children!!) The food is sophisticated and I believe underpriced. My favorites are the caesar salad (grilled!), the quail with prosciuto, the seafood bisque (the best I have ever had!) and the veal chop. I will keep coming to try other dishes.

A little more effort and.....

Mezzanotte has huge potential IF it gets things right. The food, although tasty, was stone cold when presented to us which I suspect was due to a shortage of waiters. The decor - or lack of it, does little for the atmosphere as it was just too dark. Any good Italian restaurant can only be enhanced with a suitable choice of background music - but definitely not modern stuff. Mezzanotte has certainly got it right by using tablecloths along with decent cutlery and crockery. Cypress is in much need of good restaurants, wine bars, sports bars and classy places for friends to gather and have fun. I wish Mezzanotte well.
