West Alabama Ice House   

You can't get more Texan than an icehouse and you can get more of a classic icehouse than the West Alabama Ice House. Serving up cold ones on hot days on the outskirts of the Montrose since 1927, you can choose from one of the many scattered picnic tables out front by the bar or out back under the shade trees. There's no AC here, but a fan hooked up to the awnings blows blessed mist on both guzzlers and their lounging mongrels alike. Yes, there's always a Sad Sack dog hovering around the dusty floor next to its owner's bar stool. The normal social divide of bars is absent here with yuppies and bikers kicking back and enjoying a brewsky side by side. Houston's own St. Arnold's is available in all its magnificent seasonal variations. Other pleasant diversions include a pool out back, free hot dogs grilled on Fridays and killer jukebox
