Azuma is the kind of place that people might go before a big night out. You can eat great food with other stylish, urbane people -- and not end up feeling too full to dance. While the sushi and signature rolls are wonderful here, the real crowd-pleaser has to be the hot rock beef: Tender slices of meat cooked over a steaming hot rock, right at the table. Ask the server to recommend sake from the extensive list, or just enjoy a Japanese beer. A good selection of wines and a few signature specialty cocktails are also on the drink menu. On a date? Try to grab a table overlooking the tiny little Zen garden for the most romantic view. The upstairs loft can accommodate larger groups.

Ugh, go to Sasaki instead
By superlluclkycat on 01/12/2005
The food is barely recognizable as Japanese cuisine. I guess the traditional recipes got lost in all the fracas over trying to come up with new strange rolls. I would rather go to Sasaki anyday, where the service, food and atmosphere are all traditional Japanese. At Azuma, the managers, hostesses and waiters are all snobby faux-rich (probably really from Alief, anyway) and provide bad service.

Keep away

My love of Japanese food and culture was my weakness when going here. Although beautifully decorated the rest of the place was HORRIBLE. I was dinning with my family and one of the members was disabled. The waiters and even manager were making fun of him. Our food took 1 hour to get and no one stooped by to check on us or even ask if we were ok. It was obvious that they are prejudice against people that don't fit into the false upscale appearence of the place. The food was aweful. Please do me a favor don't waste your money. This rude and crude spot does not fit the cozy charm of all the other restaurants nuzzled in the cool spot The Village. Bad food, bad prices, and prejudice against the handicap is all I can say
