The fare at El Pueblito is a successful marriage of Mexican and Guatemalan food, based on the family recipes of owners Monica and Eduardo Lopez. You'll experience the menu's duality as soon as you sit down in this charming restaurant in the Montrose area. The chips come with the usual tomato and hot pepper salsa, but the second dipping sauce is a sweet, chunky pineapple creation. The traditional Mexican food side dishes of guacamole, refried beans and sour cream are joined by fried plantains and fruit relish. Of course you'll find Mexican staples such as the chicken fajitas on the menu, served with guacamole, rice, pico de gallo, sopa de pollo and tortillas. Specials abound at El Pueblito, from lunch time treats to the Madness Plate, blackened catfish with a salad, desert and a margarita. On your way to the back dining room you'll get a peek into the Pueblito kitchen, a bustling, cramped affair with a sizzling grill and simmering pots of black beans where batches of fresh flour tortillas are handmade twice a day. And that back dining room is worth the trip. Besides the bar that's tucked into the corner, there's a large, lovely patio complete with lush greenery and fire lanterns. Small music combos perform there a couple of nights a week but the performers and schedule changes often, so check with the cafe for the latest roster. -- Olivia Flores Alvarez

Flies on Food
By JR1934 on 05/30/2008
The food is outstanding but the management still hasn't addressed the presence of flies in the patio. Eating inside is safer

great eats

not your ordinary mexican, exciting and easy to get hooked on. Only downside was a charge for vallet parking that they didn't tell us about till they returned the car after dinner. Only $3, but kinda took some joy out of a great evening when the vallet returned my $2 tip and informed me ,while blocking the door to my car, about the fee. Would go back but could see how some wouldn't because of the hidden fee.

Great food and service
By dcdale on 01/17/2006
My office colleague and I have been to El Pueblito for lunch numerous times, and every time have had good, friendly service inside and on the patio. Excellent variety of dishes, great fish at very low price, that are beautifully presented, healthy and yummy. The pineapple salsa is to die for. Will be bringing a conference group there in March.

Horrible place
By bibi4768 on 03/03/2005
I went there once and vowed never to go again. The service was horrible, there was one waiter for the whole place. The lighting was terrible and let me not get started on the price. We ordered what we thought were "nachos," not exactly what we expected. Some of the food is over priced for the poor quality we received. The outside pretty much describes what you are to expect inside. Please avoid it at all cost.
