More than a year after the release of Strung Out's eight-song EP 'The Element of Sonic Defiance,' and the departure of co-founder/bassist Jim Cherry, punk rockers nationwide debate the merits of the "new" Strung Out. Chris Aiken now plays bass and Strung Out has ventured forth with added progressive-rock and metal tendencies, an experiment that has only increased the quintet's entertainment quotient. Quintets remain a rare commodity in punk circles, and the twin-guitar attack is so tightly wound that the end result is deeply textured and pleasing. An alarming length of time between full albums may mean that new material puts in a strong showing at Strung Out's gigs. -- William Athey
