At first glance, the House of Pies would seem like just another full-service, 24-hour diner. But look a little closer, and you'll find one of the hottest late-night spots in Houston. You'll see all kinds of patrons and pies here -- it's not uncommon to find curfew-breaking club kids and Houston socialites sitting side-by-side after a long night on the town. With more than 40 pies and cakes to choose from, the menu and the portions are definitely Texas-sized; if in doubt, take a look at the description of the Sausage Scrambler. The diner-style service is so authentic that you may have the urge to call your waitress Flo. If you arrive any time after 1AM, be ready to wait a while for your table, but the experience is well worth the wait. Order a cup of joe at the counter, sit back and get ready for the late-night meal of your life. -- Andrea R. Audish

A landmark in Houston
By patrckball on 03/18/2007
Been going here late at night since the 60's and cannot find better pies. My favorites: key lime tastes tart like lime should; bayou goo is soooo good to die for; and you should take a piece of carrot cake home for breakfast the next morning. Believe me, the carrot-pecan cake serving is huge and the very best I have hound anywhere in the world! Waitstaff is as good as a diner gets, with character. Salads are their weak item, I think. They can get very crowded (see Editor's review), so the [new] minimum service signs are for the person who sits over a cup of refillable coffee, without ordering anything else, and reads their 500 page book. Thank you.
