A tree-lined street in one of the oldest neighborhoods in Houston is home to this multiethnic, multicultural arts center. The throng of kids that take music, theater and art classes here every afternoon probably haven't noticed the plaque by the front door that says the National Registry of Historic Places counts MECAs building, a refurbished 1912 school, on its roster. And who could blame them? There's much too much to do here to go around reading plaques. A theater group rehearses on the plain, bare-bones stage, a six-foot-tall wood and metal sculpture, a modern depiction of the famous Aztec calendar nearby. A group of young artists paints a mural on a side wall while a mariachi band practices in one of the center's two dozen classrooms. There are few frills at MECA. Audiences sit on metal folding chairs, but the performances are first class. The mariachi group regularly takes top honors at music contests, student artwork has sold for hundreds of dollars, and participants have won scholarships to Rice, Carnegie Mellon and Julliard. -- Olivia Flores Alvarez
