This longtime favorite Japanese spot served sushi when sushi wasn't cool. Now, a new breed of trend-mongers flocks to the West Houston hideaway for some of the freshest fish in town, served in a retro-Asian atmosphere that is more comforting than its loud, contemporary versions. With nearly 40 choices of sushi and sashimi, as well as a wide assortment of rolls-from your basic California to the himachi maki with yellow tail and flying fish eggs -- fans will not likely be left wanting. Best of all, most of the sushi and sashimi are offered in ready-made combinations or you can create your own roll. Seafood options include scallop, flounder, octopus, oyster, crab, squid, tuna, salmon, soft shell crawfish and shrimp, which are wrapped in your choice of seaweed or soy paper. Traditionalists (read: the folks that sushi lovers drag to these places) can also find a lot to like on the menu. Tempura and teriyaki dishes are in abundance to satisfy those who prefer their food cooked. Tempura shrimp, squid and vegetables are lightly battered and fried for a comfort-food approach to the Japanese experience, while rib-eyes, chicken breasts, shrimp and tuna steaks are given the tangy teriyaki treatment.

Miyako is very overrated. Should not even be on this list. Have never been pleased there and quit going. For good sushi, try Zushi on Memorial and Wescott.

The best ever!

Miyako is simply the best. The sushi is always perfect! The place is kept clean at all times. Most importantly, the staff is great. When you're a regular like myself, they make it a point to greet you and call you by your name.

My Fave

I love what Miyako has to offer... it gets my palate appeased, my stomach full, my mood up and my wallet heavy... a good time with room to impress... my friends have long dined with the restaurant as we are college folk in search of good eats and a fun time... look for us always up in the restaurant (we'll be the ones with all the sushi piled on the table and chopsticks flying about scurrying for wasabi).
