The city has a slew of small companies that produce quality work, and Theater LaB Houston is among the local showcases of contemporary theater. Theater LaB opened in 1993, and since then has produced more than 50 productions. Many shows have been lauded nationally, including 'Like Totally Weird' in 1998. One of the company's southwest 1999 premieres, 'Blood Brothers,' currently runs in London. The theater seats 100, and the company prides itself on using the entire theater as a stage to effectively involve the audience in each production. Theater LaB also hosts a number of community events and productions for local schools, and also encourages other local groups (particularly younger actors) to use the facility for their own productions. The LaB has, in the past, commissioned area playwrights to write original plays, especially for children's theater. -- Steve Mark
