In case you're training for the next world-class eating competition, you need to know about Mel's Country Cafe, a dive of a restaurant northwest of Houston. Their Mega Mel Burger is a 1 pound monstrosity complete with six beef patties stacked high and layered with -pound of cheese and a full pound of bacon, plus all the trimmings. Those lucky few who are able to finish it by themselves within the two-hour time limit earn a place on Mel's Wall of Fame. For the less adventurous, or perhaps the less hungry, a regular Mel's burger - a half-pounder cooked to your specs - is worth the trip. Other menu items that get raves from regulars include the enormous chicken fried steak and the fried catfish.

The Best Home cooking
By carhpd on 01/25/2008
If you want good home cooking this is the place. If you want the best fried catfish this is the only place. You can also get entertained by watching foolish people try to eat their way through a mile high hambuger. This is something you have to see to believe. Or if you gutzy or even hungry enough this is a place you need to be.

More food than you can eat
By tlynnjack on 03/19/2007
I haven't had a bad meal at Mel's yet. If you go on all you can eat night (Fridays) be prepared to wait, but it will definitely be worth it. The menu items are great too. I'm especially in love with their onion rings.

Chicken fried
By peachfarm1 on 02/28/2007
Mels is the best place for chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken, and onion rings. I would have driven by the place but a friend told me about the chicken fried steak and it is good

Worth the Wait

Worth the drive to Tomball. Get lost? Just ask anyone -- we have been going there for years. The original hole in the wall diner everyone loves. I thought it would win for its chicken fried steak!
