Nestled in the corner of a shopping center is Club Tropicana, a spacious salsa spot with plenty of international flair. Tuesdays and Fridays, Mi Rumba takes the stage playing salsa, meringue and bachata. In between sets, DJ Salserin or DJ Tomixeao play tropical and international beats. Saturdays, DJ Tomixeao spins all night. Four projectors show Latin videos, as well. Never salsa-ed? No problem. Dance classes are held every Friday when the doors open. Buying a bottle of your favorite liquor gets you a seat in the Lounge Area, where you can relax in comfortable chairs as you survey the crowd. Fine cigars are also available if you're craving a corona. Additionally, bathrooms have valets with perfume and all the necessary items to keep you looking luscious. -- Sarah Nichols

Dancing early, clubbing late

Just got back from Saturday night at Tropicana in Houston. Being from New York and looking for a salsa dancing crowd, I was prepared to be disappointed. But...alas! The place was really quite fun. Salsa lessons from 9:00 to 10:00 were as expected in a club - basic and simple, but a good chance to see the crowd or have a beer or take part in the early festivities. Dancing from 10:00 to about 12:00 or 12:30 (50% salsa, 25% bachata, 25% merengue) was quite good. Changover to latin rock and raggaeton at about 12:30. The band was outstanding. Everybody wass friendly, and while not the dancer quality of LA, New York, or Washington DC, everybody danced quite well and mostly had a lot of fun. Much more relaxed than any of those other places. When I left the club there were suddenly police outside, but they assured me there was never any trouble. I can imagine that to be true, everybody was ultra-polite. Parking is a problem, though. Get there from 9:00 to 10:00 or take a taxi.

Parking near Nightclubs at Richmond Ave Houston TX will be towed between Fondren and S. Gessner Parking can be a problem. Steer clear of the buildings next door, across street or your car will be towed. Cost $190 to get car back + Taxi
