Though this isn't an Irish pub -- or anything even remotely resembling one -- it is the hub of St. Paddy's Day mayhem in town. Owner Mal (brother of Hal) has organized an annual St. Patrick's Day parade every year for more than two decades -- even longer than his restaurant has existed! There's a different theme each year, and the event lasts all day, ending with an after- bash back at the bar. Practically all of Jackson is Irish for the day. The rest of the year, the menu and atmosphere here are contemporary American brewpub with just enough Southern style to keep everybody happy. Kitchen offerings vary from classic (gumbo) to contemporary (grilled shrimp Caesar) to only-when-you're-good-and-drunk (deep-fried dill pickles). The house brewmaster provides an ever-changing selection of unique microbrews. After dinner hours, the focus turns to the stage, where regional and local music acts perform everything from folk to funk. -- Lena Katz

ABSOLUTELY THE BEST GUMBO!!
By vaa5000 on 02/18/2007
When did it become "White Brother, Inc."? I have never known it as anything other than Hal & Mal's...and my favorite place in town to eat. They have killer seafood gumbo and when I get a craving for it, nothing else will do. My favorite waitress, Anne, is terrific and I have never been disappointed when I dine at this restaurant.

most versatile atmosphere
By jackiebankston58 on 01/31/2007
This place has the most to offer of any other in the area. It is VERY laid back and no one has to put on airs. All are welcome. Music ranges from solo entertainers to bands and they always have the best musicians playing. Their menu is so varied that it is hard to choose what to order. Great food specials too. again, variety, variety, variety - yet you can consistently count that a good time will be had by al.
