A former movie theater now transformed into downtown Lawrence's most happening and largest dance club, the Granada Theatre also plays host to concerts too large for the more intimate Bottleneck but not quite big enough for Liberty Hall. Assuming there's no concert going on, Tuesday nights are usually mellow, with most patrons hanging out in the backroom bar, the Aqua Lounge, sipping on well-made cocktails while chatting, listening to bad karaoke and surveying the exotic fish that inhabit the large tanks that line one wall. Wednesday through Saturday nights usually feature some sort of dance theme -- be it '80s flashback, hip-hop, techno or just plain groovin' tunes -- but the schedule and DJs seem to be constantly changing in an attempt to cater to the sometimes fickle dance market. If you're going to the Granada for a concert, there are several things to keep in mind. Seating is almost non-existent in the main room, so if you want to secure a spot at one of the half- dozen small tables make sure to show up well in advance. The lowered pit area that goes back about 15 feet from the stage usually attracts the most enthusiastic revelers, but if you don't mind standing the best place to watch a concert might be on higher ground, leaning against the railings that separate the pit from the main viewing area.
