Lawrence is just twenty minutes outside Johnson County, and those contemplating staying there might want to consider going to the Eldridge instead. Located in the heart of historic downtown Lawrence, the hotel is an old brick building that wouldn't look out of place in downtown KC. While the rooms are on the small side (some would say cramped), it's still a great experience. The well- stocked Jayhawker bar on the lobby level is filled with elegant Victorian furniture, and the wall is decorated with memorabilia from the mid-1800s when Lawrence was the site of battles between Jayhawkers (anti-slavery folks) and pro-slavery forces. Shalor's restaurant is located on the first floor.
