There are plenty of places to eat good barbecue in Kansas City. So why go to Gates? For starters, Gates is one of the legends of KC barbecue. The first Gates restaurant opened in 1946 at 19th and Vine, when the district was still a hoppin' jazz spot. The Gates empire has since grown to six restaurants in the metro area. Part of that success has been Gates' irresistible original sauce, which gives the slow-smoked beef, pork, chicken and other comfort food a pleasing zip. Another reason for success is Gates' College of Bar-B-Que Knowledge, which all employees attend to ensure they're doing the job right. Some customers complain of Gates' noisy atmosphere, because barbecue college training involves learning to call, "Hi, may I help you?" to every customer who walks through the door. If you're one who likes to eat your meal in peace, consider grabbing some Gates to go. In addition to all menu items, Gates sells smoked meat by the pound and sauce by the jar. Or look for one of the four varieties of sauce at your supermarket. -- Anna Foote

Best coleslaw ever
By Msdanahi on 02/27/2009
I would recommend take-out at Gates for their coleslaw but not for the meat, which was fatty, cheap, substandard. Gates Barbeque has the best coleslaw I have ever tasted, and I'm not even a coleslaw fan. It has a wonderful, texture, slightly sweet and spicy flavor with many ingredients and a refreshing cucumber taste. I could eat a very large serving, which is unusual for me because I fill up quick. IThe coleslaw also goes great with barbeque. I ordered a large container of coleslaw to go and ate the entire thing in three days!!! If you are on a diet, it will also satisfy your sweet tooth without blowing your diet. Gates sauces are also very yummy, much better than B.B.s or Jack Stack.( you can buy Gates BBQ sauces at local grocery stores for a reasonable price). I will be seriously be back for the coleslaw and it's worth every penny. Arthur Bryants is a better bet for affordable BBQ, and has large servings of smoky delicious meat at reasonable prices.

Love Gates
By CBOlvera on 01/15/2009
I grew up in KC and have loved Gates for years. I live on the West Coast now and order their sauce. My husband insisted on stopping there straight from the airport when we flew home for Thanksgiving one year . I miss being able to go there. KC has the best BBQ - you simply can't get it out here.

Had to try it as locals raved about Gates
By BORPISLEY on 09/14/2008
You have to order at counter which is part of the fun other than the cashier was hard to understand. We tried ribs, ham and pork . You can try all three of their sauces. I was not impressed with the quality of the meat as a whole. The hame and beef were like processed fare from the supermarket. The beef ribs were succulent. The sauces were tangy. The potato salad was outstanding and the bean were alright. The dining room is quite dingy and the service is minimal. We would not go back. We preferred our next night visit to Fiorella Jacks Stack in the plaza. What a big difference.

Best Ham sandwich anywhere!
By B101682 on 07/29/2008
I've been to a lot of bar-b-que places in my time. There is no sandwich anywhere that is better than the Ham-and -a-half. The ham is piled two inches high and with the original sauce, there is no better. Throw in some fries and you have a meal the can't be beat!
