This bed and breakfast was originally built as an European-style inn in 1885, and it retains touches of its Victorian charm. But don't let the vintage date scare you away if you're in town on business. The innkeepers know the importance of the voice mail-modem-fax combination for workaholics. If you're in Lawrence for fun, Halcyon House is in a great location. It's just three blocks from downtown's quaint shopping, dining and entertainment district. Also, the inn is located just off the University of Kansas campus, which offers great museums and sporting events. Back home at the inn, you'll have your choice of nine bedrooms. Prices range from an economical $49 to a high of $149 for the Carriage House suite. Regardless of the price you pay, you'll get a delicious, freshly prepared breakfast each morning of your stay. -- Anna Foote
