For more than 30 years, The American has been Kansas City's premier fine dining restaurant -- on par with New York's best. It remains so today. The decor and food are elegant, and the knowledgeable waitstaff ensures diners have a flawless experience. The restaurant provides sweeping views of Crown Center's courtyard, and the terrace is especially pretty in winter, when it comes alive with hundreds of tiny white lights. Regardless of season, the restaurant's interior is beautiful. Fan-shaped oak canopies on the ceiling create a sense of intimacy despite the restaurant's grand scale. But the true beauty of the American is its upscale, inventive entrees. Though the menu changes frequently, The American always has an interesting collection of first courses. Try delights like seared tuna, foie gras or roasted garlic flan. A perennial favorite is the four-hour veal shank, which is slow-braised in cabernet sauvignon. You'll also find chicken, fish, beef and pork dishes. Save room for dessert -- the pastry chef provides a vast array of delights. -- Anna Foote

not that good.

This place is ok for the first date. It's way too expensive for the okay food. However, like I said ...good if you want to impress your date.

The One Star Crowd
By hansumtoad on 01/03/2007
Reading these reviews was amsuing. For you one star folks, there's always McDonald's or for a real gourmet experience, the Town Topic or Chubby's at 2AM. Last time at The American we were seated carrying our drinks from the bar. It was obviously business; therefore the staff unpreteniously left us alone. When I removed my napkin into my lap, the staff appeared immediately on cue and took care of us in the best manner. One of the guests was a high powered CEO from New York City. Interesing that he would remark "too bad The American isn't in NYC. You are very fortunate to have something like this". Guess he's never been to Town Topic or Chubby's.

I found the food poor, and staff unattentive. Why four stars? I give it one.
