Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And if you behold enormous, industrial sculpture and cheap, generously portioned bar food to be a thing of beauty, then Grinders on 18th is your lunchtime Louvre. The curator of this downtown eatery, Stretch, is a personality nearly as large as the rusty metal constructions anchoring his adjacent gallery. The singularly named artist has emerged as the area's most prominent sculptor and a self-appointed advocate for the fledgling Crossroad's Art District. But Grinders just might be his greatest work yet. The pizzas, with ''standard issue'' or ''fancy pants'' toppings, can be as abstract or classical as you wish. The Philly cheesesteak comes with either provolone or an authentic but unnatural oozing of cheese wiz and is perfectly accompanied by an order of the retro tater-tots that Grinders contends are ''just like in the trailer park.'' And though Stretch is not likely the one tossing your ''absolutely insane,'' non-refundable ''Death Wings,'' his full length diner-style counter affords a front row seat to the sculpting of downtown's most artistic greasy spoon.

Good philly cheese steak
By mainekoonmama1 on 02/29/2008
If you want good philly cheese steak, go to Nick and Jack's in Parkville, MO. They use the best ingredients and kobe steak for the sandwich. I am a NYer and this is very good. The best you'll find here in KC without having to travel far.

PHILY CHEESE STEAK FRAUDS
By njmws on 02/02/2008
WOW!! STOP IT!!! YOU POOR PEOPLE IN KANSAS CITY. IF THIS IS THE BEST CHEESE STEAK SANDWICH THAT THE CITY OFFERS YOU NEED TO MOVE. THE PLACE WAS PACKED WITH A WIDE AGE RANGE OF PEOPLE. WALKING INTO THE PLACE, IT WAS IN POOR SHAPE, DIRTY, AND A BUNCH OF KIDS WITH LONG HAIR LOOKING LIKE THEY WERE IN NEED OF SOME GROOMING TIPS DOING THE COOKING. WE ORDERED TWO PHILLY CHEESE STEAKS AND I HAVE TO TELL YOU WHEN THEY CAME OUT YOU KNEW THAT THEY WERE NOT GOING TO BE GOOD. THE BREAD WAS DRY, THE STEAK WAS CHOPPED UP AND OVER COOKED, AND TO MAKE IT WORST THEY SEASONED IT WITH ENOUGH SALT THAT YOU COULD NOT EAT THE THING. ( WE WERE TOLD ABOUT THE PLACE FOR IT WAS ON THE FOOD NETWORK STATION) AGAIN, I AM DONE WITH THEM, THEY MUST BE RELATED. THE WORST! YOUR BETTER OFF GOING TO THE MARKET BUYING THE CHEAPEST SLICED PRE-PACKAGED STEAK SLICES AND A STALE HOT DOG ROLL AND LET YOUR 5 YEAR OLD DO THE SEASONING. IF I STILL LIVED IN PHILLY AND TRIED THIS ABORTION I WOULD CONTACT MY LAWYER ALONG WITH THE FRAUD DEPARTMENT FOR THE FOOD NETWORK AND GRINDERS TRYING TO PASS ON THIS THING AS A PHILADELPHIA CHEESE STEAK. (PLEASE GET REAL)

Was cool looking but didn't seem that special. Had a pizza which was very good but not the best and a bit small and not that cheap. I'll have to try a cheese steak and re-evaluate.
