Kansas City is a cow town -- there's no getting around it. (Those of you who would disagree, look to the stockyards just west of downtown.) But for beef-eaters, being in this cow town has a huge upside -- you'll find some of the best steaks anywhere. The Hereford House tradition is a strong part of KC's steak reputation. Since 1957, chefs at this restaurant have been aging and cooking steaks to perfection, and the tradition continues. You'll find all the expected steak-house fare here, including, of course, the KC strip. For non-steak eaters, the menu also features good seafood dishes. Sides include crisp salads and potatoes just about any way you'd like them -- try them mashed, baked or french-fried. Prices are in line with what you'll see at any high-quality steak house. Frugal meat eaters have two options: Try Hereford House for lunch, when entree prices are lower and a variety of sandwiches are offered, or drop in for an early dinner. The restaurant serves a less-expensive, still-delicious sunset menu from 3-5:30PM on weekdays and from 4-5PM on Saturday and Sunday. -- Anna Foote

The staff are excellent and go out of their way to make your stay there pleasant. Steaks are wonderful. Love the prime rib. Husand is hard to please but never one complaint. He loves the chopped steak. Never had a bad experience there.

Every since Jimmy and Mary's closed umpteen years ago, we have considered the Herford House the best. My last experience there ,about two months ago, proved otherwise. My steak had to be retured to the kitchen to be cook some more and when I tasted it it was just so so and very fatty. What a disapointment.
